Popular Food of Kerala
If you are used to the guide North Indian dishes everywhere in Indian restaurants (think butter chicken), you will be surprised in Kerala. The distinctive cuisine of the coastal state is tied to its ancient commercial heritage and is a fusion of Christian, Muslim, and Hindu global culinary traditions. Coconut, shellfish, and spices are highly characterized and combine to give Kerala food its flavor. Don’t be surprised to find meat on the menu either!
adhya on a banana leaf
For typical Kerala cooking, start with a sadhya (Kerala-style feast) on a banana leaf. This vegetarian Hindu holiday has more than 20 items, and it is an important part of festivals like Onam. The items are arranged on the sheet in a particular order from left to right. Pickles, chutneys, salt, pappadam, and banana chips are on the left. The curries are on the right. This is usually a lunchtime meal and is best eaten with your fingers (don’t use silverware!). Ideally, proceed from left to right for a progression of flavors from mild to spicy and sweet. When you have completed the meal, fold the banana leaf in half to indicate that you are done. That is if you can devour it all!
In the capital city of Trivandrum, order the extensive sadhya at Mother’s Veg Plaza. Better yet, get yourself an invitation to a wedding or special occasion at someone’s home.
Erachi Ularthiyathu
The name of this legendary Syrian Christian dish is surely not easy to pronounce, which is why it is fortunate that it is known as dried beef everywhere (colloquially, you can only order BDF). The dish is so beloved in Kerala that many people refer to it as the state dish! To do this, the pieces of beef are fried or roasted very slowly in a heavy skillet along with chunks of coconut, ground aromatic spices, chili peppers, and curry leaves. Some tourists prefer Syrian Christian beef curry as it is more like Indian food to them.
Fingerlings are popularly consumed with alcohol in local bars and toy stores. So, you will find the most delicious dishes there. The award-winning Mullapanthal toy store on MLA Road in Tripunithura near Kochi is one of the best.
Meen Molee
Don’t you like spicy food? This light coconut fish stew, which is a signature dish from central Kerala, is ideal. Its name, molee, may derive from mole, which means sauce or cooking mixture. The stew is made without the sour tamarind ( kudam puli) common in other Kerala curries.
Meen Molee is widely available in Kerala. It’s a specialty at the famous Fusion Bay restaurant on KB Jacob Road in Fort Kochi. Gobble it up with clothes or rice. Oceanos at the Elphinstone Residence in Kochi is recommended for seafood, including molee meen , as well.
Meen Vevichathu
A highly spiced and fiery Kerala fish curry, meen vevichathu, is probable to make you sweat! This red, spicy, tamarind-based curry is associated with the central Kottayam district of the state. Sardines or mackerel add even more flavor. Try meen vevichathu in the atmosphere of the Fort House restaurant, in the garden of the Fort House hotel in Fort Kochi. It is served in traditional style with kappa (yucca plant root) as an aside.
Kappa Puzhukku
Yucca is said to have been introduced by the Portuguese. However, King Visakham Thirunal of Travencore ordered its cultivation during his reign in the 19th century to prevent recurring famine. Residents were reluctant to accept it, as it was seen as the poor man’s food. However, that changed in the 1940s when a great famine struck the state. Now, kappa is considered a delicacy. It is made by boiling and mashing the root of the yucca plant with grated coconut and spices. It is usually eaten with curried fish.
Karimeen Pollichathu
You cannot visit Kerala and not taste the official fish of the state, karimeen (pearl point). To enjoy authentic pollichathu karimeen, go to the elegant Grand Pavilion at the Grand Hotel in Kochi or the Karimpumkala restaurant management family in Pallom near Kottayam. Karimpumkala started as a toy store in 1958 before expanding. The dishes are made from recipes that belong to the owner’s mother.
Thalassery Malabar Biryani
Kerala has its style of Biryani. Thalassery biriyani, from Thalassery in the Malabar region, is the most famous. They settled there and established themselves as the Muslim community of Mappila (Moplah). Paragon Restaurant, founded in 1939 in Calicut (Kozhikode), is the place to fill up on Malabar biriyani. Paragon’s release, Salkara, is also famous for Biryani. It’s also Zain’s iconic hotel on Convent Cross Road, near the beach in Calicut. If you prefer to dine somewhere more exclusive in Calicut, head to the Mezban restaurant at the Asma Tower Hotel.

Enjoy it by the pier at Seagull Restaurant on Calvathy Road overlooking the ocean in Fort Kochi. Make sure to book in advance if you want a table with a sunset view.
Appam
Appam is compared to a Dutch pancake, but it is made with fermented rice and coconut milk. This garnish is eaten like bread with all kinds of stews and curries. Soft in the middle and crisp on the edges, it is a staple in Syrian Christian households where it is served at all times of the day, including breakfast. When eating, break off a small piece of clothing with your right hand and use it to pick up something from the main dish.
Malabar Parotta
This succulent South Indian bread is, as the name implies, from the Malabar region of Kerala, where the Arabs come from. Break it up with your fingers and eat it with meat for maximum satisfaction. For Kerala residents, this combination is not a dish but an emotion. Without, however, the parotta Malabar can be combined with any curry.
Pathiri
Different Malabar specialty, pathiri is essentially a roti or pancake made from rice flour. It belongs to the Mappila Muslim community, who commonly eat it for dinner with a non-vegetarian curry. Pathiri can be cooked on a griddle ( ari pathiri), fried ( ney pathiri ), or stuffed with meat and vegetables ( erachi pathiri ).
Puttu
Do you want to have a typical Keralan breakfast? The puttu with kadala (chickpea curry) is one of the most popular foods in the state. Puttu is prepared by steaming ground rice and grated coconut together in cylinders.
